Are there any prerequisites?
COSS has no prerequisites for entering, therefore, in each class; we tend to have a mix of non- experienced, first time safety persons, as well as safety professionals who have been in the safety field for 20+ years.  However, we have learned that regardless of the number of years of experience you have in safety, everyone leaves the COSS class with a wealth of knowledge!

What will you learn?
COSS educates students on managing Safety effectively within their organization.  Skills achieved in COSS include: how to read and understand the OSHA 1910 and 1926 CFRs,  calculating the true costs of accidents,  identifying hazards and implementing corrective actions, performing risk assessments for key jobs and procedures, how to develop, implement, maintain safety plans and much more!   COSS focuses on providing Safety Practitioners the tools and techniques needed to make an impact on the safety of their organization.

What will you get from the class?
By taking the class, you will have your national Certified Occupational Safety Specialist Designation; your OSHA 10 hour card of completion in Construction; and your OSHA 10 hour card of completion in General Industry!   In addition, 40 contact hours accepted by California Water Environment Association (CWEA).

Who is COSS recognized by?
COSS is currently one of only 18 programs in the world recognized and accredited by the American Petroleum Institute (API). In addition, the certifying body for construction education for colleges, universities and technical/trade schools, American Council for Construction Education (ACCE) has also recognized our program. COSS is the only non-degree program to receive this national endorsement.  Lastly, COSS has been established as a mandatory course for students in the Construction Management Program at Louisiana State University.

What does the program consist of?
The program consists of 40 hours of hands on, face-to-face learning, which is delivered by a COSS certified safety instructor.  Case studies and workshops are used extensively to bring learning objectives into focus.  Guest speakers from areas such as OSHA and other governmental agencies are used to enhance the learning experience.  Student presentations, daily quizzes, practical reviews and a comprehensive final exam will allow you to demonstrate your competency.

Where can I complete the COSS program?
The COSS course is offered at over 13 locations nationwide. However, Pacific Safety Council is the only Authorized Training Provider on the West Coast.
