Position Overview
Ensures a safe workplace for all within General Dynamics NASSCO by maintaining compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and local regulations through training, verification, and enforcement of company health and safety policy and procedures.
Principal Responsibilities
Conduct daily inspections and audits of assigned areas ensuring that all operations (including those of Sub-Contractors) are in compliance with Federal, State, and local regulations and NASSCO health and safety policies and procedures. Identify health and safety hazards and deficiencies and initiates corrective action through production supervision.
Prepare written reports on inspections and audits, accident investigations, statistical information on injuries and illnesses, employee complaints or concerns. Write articles to be used in Safety Grams, GangboxTopics, Shipbuilder Articles, or other communication vehicles.
Position Demands
High School diploma or equivalent. Two years experience performing the duties of safety enforcement, coaching and counseling in an industrial or construction environment.
Will require continuing education in health and safety related courses that lead towards a professional certification and/or a degree in Occupational Health and Safety.
The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to successfully interact with management and employees.
Must be able to climb ladders and work in on-board shop and assembly production areas. Must be physically able to walk to all yard locations. The noise level in this environment is usually moderate.

Job Description:
The primary role of a Safety Engineer is to assist in the development, coordination and maintenance of the facility's Health, Safety, Wellness, and Site Security programs. The Safety Engineer will be maintaining and ensuring the following areas: compliance with federal and CalOSHA safety and health regulations, safety policies, and accident prevention programs to reduce the potential for accidents and incidents in the work place.
Minimum of a 4-year degree preferred in Safety and Health related field. Minimum of (1) year experience in Safety and Health field.
Must have a thorough working knowledge of OSHA and CalOSHA, technical aptitude, industrial hygiene monitoring skills, strong presentation, facilitation, interpersonal, and communication skills. Computer literacy is also a must. Knowledge with Microsoft excel, PowerPoint and Access is required. Working knowledge of proven behavior based safety practices and Workers Compensation laws.
The ideal candidate must be versed in planning and organizing. Must possess attention to detail, excellent written and verbal communication skills, possess the ability to problem-solve and take initiative. In addition, the ideal candidate must be resilient, possess strong mathematical skills, and an aptitude for managerial courage and integrity.

Occupational Safety Specialist In Concord, CA
Job Description:
Avitus Group is seeking an occupational safety specialist (“specialist”) for our office in Concord, CA. The specialist will conduct worksite safety inspections, perform on-site employee safety training and provide safety consultations and recommendation to our small business clients across a wide range of occupations. Industries include (but not are limited to) residential amp; commercial construction and related trades, transportation, medical specialties, retail, warehousing, professional offices, HVAC and more.
This is an entry level field position and qualifications desired are 1-2 years of general occupational safety experience, COSS certification or AA or BA degree or equivalent experience and training in the occupational safety field. A good working knowledge of CAL-OSHA regulations and their practical and effective application in diverse settings is necessary. Bilingual (English / Spanish) preferred. Salary DOQ and some overnight travel (via auto or aircraft) is required.

SAFETY SPECIALIST I
Job Description:
The Port of San Diego is currently accepting applications and/or resumes for the position of Safety Specialist I. This position is non-exempt (eligible for overtime).
The Port of San Diego provides a comprehensive benefit package including medical, dental and life insurance; thirteen (13) paid holidays per year, paid vacation, tuition reimbursement, a defined benefit retirement plan and more.
Under general supervision, participates in administering a comprehensive safety management program for the District; conducts field audits, investigations and job safety analyses; develops and conducts safety, hazardous materials and safety training programs and meetings; and performs related work as assigned. An incumbent in this class participates in administering the District’s safety and environmental programs by performing a variety of investigative, analytical and training assignments that range from fairly routine to moderately difficult in scope and complexity.
Requirements for the position are:
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent. Graduation from a four-year college or university with major course work in occupational health studies, environmental studies or a closely related field is preferred.
- Two years of increasingly responsible experience in occupational health and safety programs, including conducting accident or safety investigations or designing and conducting employee safety training programs in an industrial setting. Experience in a governmental setting is preferred.
Licenses, Certificates and Special Requirements:
- A current, valid California Class C driver’s license at time of appointment and maintained at all times thereafter in order to operate a vehicle on District business.
- Professional certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is preferred.
- HAZWOPER and HAZWOPER Supervisor certificates or the ability to obtain such certificates upon appointment; HAZWOPER certificates must be maintained on a continuing basis.
- Current valid CPR Red Cross Instructor and Advanced First Aid certificates or the ability to obtain such certificates upon appointment.

ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY COORDINATOR: El Cajon, CA (San Diego) RISK MANAGEMENT
Job Description:
Under the direction of the Director, Risk Management, perform a variety of specialized duties; such as, receiving and storing hazardous and biological waste, fire and safety equipment inspection and service, and assist in activities to comply with CAL/OSHA and other federal, state, county and city occupational and environmental health and safety regulations, and conduct district wide training.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Coordinate and conduct inspection and servicing of fire extinguishers and safety equipment in the District; distinguish types of extinguishers to determine correct type for each location; map and locate all fire and emergency equipment; maintain and update procedure manual for inspections in accordance with city fire ordinances; install fire extinguishers according to city fire code. Assist on inspections regarding OSHA, HAZMAT, etc. and follows up with campuses regarding compliance. Assist in the selection of location and installation of portable eye wash stations and first aid stations; inventory, order and stock first aid supplies and protective safety equipment; map all stations. Keep records of activities, materials and supplies. Receive and store hazardous and biological waste materials using federal, state and county guidelines. Assist in the enforcement of federal, state, county and city regulations regarding health and safety hazards; apply CAL/OSHA and MSDS information of products used on all sites, advising if necessary; Arrange pesticide spraying and vector control according to the State Agricultural Department and CAL/OSHA for all district sites. Assist in coordinating public safety and health training of employees including the proper usage of hazardous materials, pesticides, and information regarding health hazards. Arrange for the production and procurement of safety and informational signs for public and employees according to federal, state, county and city ordinances. Attend training sessions regarding safety; assist in the production of instructional materials and other presentations pertaining to safety procedures and function of the Office of Risk Management. Conduct occupational safety and environmental health surveys using a variety of technical equipment. Attend meetings as directed by the Risk Manager. Train and provide work direction for safety assistants. Assist in the preparation and distribution of employee safety materials. Assist in the preparation and distribution of safety informational packets for staff; label and check out safety and first aid equipment as needed by department. Work cooperatively with each campus and local agencies to establish and maintain emergency and disaster response procedures. Conduct accident investigations; take statements, prepare reports and recommend corrective action as appropriate. Work cooperatively with each campus in the design and maintenance of an environmental health and safety program for the college to improve school conditions and facilitate compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Work cooperatively with each campus in the design and implementation of the District emergency preparedness program. Under direction, prepares studies and analyses of district environmental health and safety. Note, advise, and recommend to supervisor correctional procedures related to matters concerning environmental health and safety issues. Assist in preparation of annual reports and budgets. Assemble, oversee, and maintain all district first aid and chemical spill kits; monitor supply needs and order needed materials according to established procedures. Train and provide direction and guidance to personnel as assigned; assign and review work; participate in selection and hiring processes as requested. Remain current on developments in the field of individual, community and environmental health and safety. Perform various maintenance and repair duties on safety equipment. Operate a variety of equipment and machines including hand and power tools.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:
Ridesharing Program and carpooling. Perform related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: Bachelor's degree in the health and safety field and two years experience in an environmental health and safety program.
